Research Gaps and Their Importance

 Research Gaps and Their Importance

In research, a research gap is an essential part of a research paper, which defines the originality and uniqueness of the research paper. Research gaps formulate new knowledge. It also assists in formulating research objectives, questions, and hypotheses.

Suppose your research topic might be:

"A Fighter Jet Crash in a Populous Dhaka City: Unplanned Urbanization and Policy Failures"

For example, a fighter jet crash took place at Milestone School and College in the populous city named Dhaka. There is a research gap. Why did the fighter jet crash? The question paves the way for conducting new research in the field of populated urban areas where a fighter jet was crashed. The question not only paves the way for conducting new research but also for formulating new knowledge. That is, flying a fighter jet in the airspace of a populous city is prohibited. The gap that existed has been addressed through this question. This gap is known as the empirical gap in research, this is because there is lack of sufficient empirical data.

However, to identify the gap, it is crucial to go through many papers related to the existing fields to identify a research gap. However, if a question is raised while reviewing literature, identifying gaps becomes easier.

Conventional research shows us how to identify research gaps.

First of all, we are to read many papers related to our existing area of research to identify research gaps. Literature review is the medium of identifying research gaps. Identifying research gaps is complicated without reviewing literature.

Secondly, research gaps are mentioned in the literature review section of any paper

Thirdly, in the conclusion section of any research paper, the phrase “recommendation for further research’’ might be used as a research gap.

A research gap refers to missing information in the existing research. In other words, the unexplored area in the existing research that has been explored is defined as a research gap. In particular, a research gap fills up the blank space of the existing knowledge for delivering a new perspective that was unexplored for formulating new knowledge. A research gap defines how to formulate objectives. Based on the research objectives, research questions should be made. Moreover, research gaps pave the way for formulating hypotheses and following research objectives and research questions.

A research gap is important in research; that goes without saying.
