The Mainstream vs Voices: Power, Resistance and the Changing Medium The way power works in our society is not simple. It is complicated. Has many different parts. There is always a fight between the mainstream voice and the alternative voice. This fight is not about ideas it is also about who has power, influence and legitimacy. Michel Foucault said that power is not about using force it is also about what we know the language we use and how we talk about things. The mainstream voice usually represents the people in power who decide what is true and what is acceptable. So when an alternative voice speaks up it is not a disagreement it is a challenge to the people in power. Antonio Gramscis idea of hegemony is important to understand this.
