The Mainstream vs Voices: Power, Resistance and the Changing Medium
The way power works in our society is not simple. It is complicated. Has many different parts. There is always a fight between the mainstream voice and the alternative voice. This fight is not about ideas it is also about who has power, influence and legitimacy. Michel Foucault said that power is not about using force it is also about what we know the language we use and how we talk about things. The mainstream voice usually represents the people in power who decide what is true and what is acceptable. So when an alternative voice speaks up it is not a disagreement it is a challenge to the people in power.
Antonio Gramscis idea of hegemony is important to understand this. The people in power make their ideas seem normal in our society not by using money or politics but also by controlling our culture.
Lets look at an example. A graduate student writes on media about bad journals that publish fake research or about administrators who behave badly. These writings often tell us things that people in power do not want us to know because they challenge the way things are done. As a result the students posts might get reported they might get kicked out of a group their posts might not be seen by people or they might even get blocked or banned. This is like a kind of digital repression, where people are not physically punished but they are marginalized by controlling what people can see and who can participate.
If we look at this closely we can see that the way power works has changed. It used to be about using force. Now it is about subtle control. On media this control is done through algorithms reporting systems and decisions made by administrators. This is like what Michel Foucault said, that power works through structures not just visible force. Antonio Gramscis idea of hegemony also suggests that alternative voices are suppressed so that things can stay the way they're
We need to be careful here. Not all cases of removing content or banning people are suppression. Sometimes platforms need to control information or harmful content, which is necessary. The problem is when good content is also removed or when powerful groups use the rules to suit their interests. In this case control becomes suppression and alternative voices are marginalized.
Finally the fight between mainstream and alternative voices is still important today even though the way we communicate has changed. In the past social or physical repression was common. Now digital platforms control what we can see, who can participate and how we talk about things. So while some things, about behavior remain the same like the tendency to defend power and resist challenges the way these things happen has become more subtle and is controlled by algorithms and digital means.
