Tech Giants, Algorithms, and Our Emotions: The Invisible Control of the Digital Economy

Tech Giants, Algorithms, and Our Emotions: The Invisible Control of the Digital Economy

In today's world, we wake up every day, pick up our phones, scroll through social media, watch videos, react to posts. We think - these are the results of our personal choices. But if we go a little deeper, we see that behind this whole process there is a well-organized structure, where our emotions, attention and behavior have become part of an economic system.

At the heart of this structure is the Attention Economy - an idea where people's attention is the most valuable resource. Big technology companies like Google, Meta (Facebook), YouTube, TikTok are not just platforms; they are the gatekeepers of our information flow. What we see and what we don't see - is determined in large part by the systems created by these companies.

Their main goal is very clear - to keep users on the platform for as long as possible, because the longer we stay there, the more ads we see, and the more income we will have.

Previously, the goods in the economy were objects - such as clothes, food, cars; but in the digital age, the goods have changed, now the goods are our attention. The essence of the Attention Economy is that the content that gets the most attention is the most valuable. But attention is hard to come by, so platforms put out content that stops us, and the most effective weapon in this place is emotion.

Social media platforms use algorithms to decide which posts we will see first, which videos we will see, or which news we will reach. These algorithms work very finely; they analyze which posts we like, where we spend most of our time, what kind of videos we watch - everything and then bring us more of the same content. As a result, we gradually get stuck in a certain type of information.

Algorithms know very well that people react quickly to emotions, so they spread content that creates anger, creates fear, increases excitement, or arouses feelings of pride or humiliation. This content stops us, forces us to react; we share, comment, engage in debates.

An important point here is that we think we are reacting freely, but in reality our reactions are being shaped within a certain framework. The last step in this whole process is monetization, where digital platforms sell our attention to advertisers. The longer we are there, the more ads we see, and the more revenue we make; this process is an important part of the Digital Economy. Advertising revenue increases when a viral video gets millions of views, platform engagement increases when a controversial post gets thousands of comments - in other words, our emotions are being converted into money here.

This whole process is actually a new form of Capitalism, where an economy that was previously dependent on production and goods has now become dependent on data, attention, and emotions. Now companies don’t just sell products; they use our behavior, preferences, and even emotions to generate profit, which many call "surveillance capitalism."

Another important point here is that most of these tech companies are based in Western countries, so the information flow they control also affects the balance of global power.

In this context, the concept of Western Hegemony becomes important, because what information will spread more, what views will be popular, or which voices will be suppressed - all of these can be influenced by these platforms.

The most important question in this reality is - are we really free? Are we making our own decisions, or are our decisions being influenced by algorithms? The answer to this question is not easy, but one thing is certain: our emotions and attention are no longer completely personal; they are part of a larger economic and technological system.

Finally, in the digital age, tech giants use the Attention Economy to influence our emotions and attention through social media with the help of algorithms and convert that attention into money through monetization, which further strengthens Capitalism and contributes to the maintenance of global power structures, especially Western Hegemony.

Our greatest strength in this reality can be awareness, because only if we understand how our emotions are being used, can we stand outside that system and make our own decisions.
