 Data Colonialism VS Territorial Colonialism 


Even though the forms of exploitation have changed over time in human history, its main objective has remained the same, that is, power, control, and wealth. Once upon a time, colonies were established through the seizure of territory; today, data seizure has become possible on the basis of new colonialism. But it is noteworthy that while the entire world is under data colonialism, some states have not been able to break the old form of colonialism.


Russia and Israel are the most precise examples of this territorial colonialism. Russia included Crimea in 2014 and is currently planning to add Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia’s new map in the peace treaty negotiations. According to Russia, territorial seizure is considered the main source of power. On the contrary, Israel is busy at controlling all of Palestine through the suppression of Palestinians, the killing of more than 63,000 people, and the establishment of illegal settlements.


 On the other hand, by controlling people's personal information, habits, economic activities and social behavior, multinational tech giants are bringing the entire world under their control. Not physical territory, but digital territory is now their occupied territory. Control of data means control of the global economy. In this way, tech giants like Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft have emerged as neo-colonial powers.


The form of exploitation is now changing, but the position of the ruler and the exploited is not changing.The West discovers new tools of exploitation, and Asia, Africa, and the Middle East get used to exploiting and becoming consumers of them. In this case, it is evident that exploitation's internal structure remains unchanged.


The question is why does the position of the exploiter change but the position of the exploited does not change? The answer lies in the mentality of being exploited.Until Asian, African, and Middle Eastern countries can establish their own technology, their own data-based economies, and their own technological structures, they will remain consumers. This consumerist mentality is what sustains the West’s exploitation structure.


In today’s world, two colonialism are running parallel the old form of territorial colonialism, practiced by Russia and Israel, and the new form of data colonialism, led by Western tech giants. 


Until the exploited societies can make their own power structure, they will remain exploited, whether through territory or through data.
